Welcome to Better Babysitting. I’m Kayla, and I’m so glad that you’re here today.
Babysitting circa 2008 with my after-school buddy.
When I was 12 years old, I had my first babysitting appointment ever. My old babysitter, who was still a family friend from church, invited me to babysit her children while she and her husband attended a wedding.
They had – hold onto your hat – four boys, and I was in for a night that I will remember for the rest of my life.
That first coincidental babysitting appointment turned out to be day one at the beginning of a 15-year journey.
What began as just saying “yes” to more and more families from church turned into freedom in my teenage years. I babysat regularly after school and on weekends all throughout high school, and then nannied during the summers in college. When I was 24, I even found myself living in a foreign country, unable to speak the language and find a job.
Babysitting took care of me again, as I took care of children who didn’t understand English and I couldn’t speak to.
Now as I’m in my late 20s, I have friends and family members all around me starting families. Many of them feel at a loss with how to handle childcare, and I realize what a difficult job parents have making decisions about childcare.
Better Babysitting exists to help parents, babysitters and therefore children all have better babysitting experiences.
The resources here will help parents feel better equipped to find the best care for their children, and help babysitters have the best experiences and provide the most dedicated care.
